After reading both Karthik’s and Hemanth’s reviews of Ghajini, I, after enduring the damn thing, am going, “Du-ude!” in my best Chandler imitation.
Karthik calls it “an eminently enjoyable movie.” Du-ude – didn’t you hear “Bo… Zo…” at the beginning of the movie? How can you call the scriptwork and screenplay “tidy?” Were there not innumerable holes in the whole thing, least of which is Surya living in the same apartment where he got his head bashed in, and yet the villain not knowing; he’s got “kill him” scrawled all over the damn place, yet his auditor, his doctor and his assistant let him be, and, Asin plans to go all the way to Mumbai in a sitting train. Come on!
Hemanth goes one step further and says that “Ghajini is a good entertainer with a great adaptation by A R Murugadoss and Surya.” Du-ude!
Both Karthik and Hemanth watch way more Tamil movies than I do – the last two tamil movies I watched were Chandramukhi and Kaakha Kaakha – and so, should know much more about what they are saying. Does this mean that this is the best Tamil entertainment that one can get today? If this is “enjoyable” and an “entertainer” I shudder to think what the others will be like.
For an occasional moviegoer like me, Ghajini seemed to be an atrocious waste of time.
And, can someone tell me why the movie is called what it is called?

Ok, I have to defend my reputation here.
1. What did you expect, Memento?
2. Um.. logic? Tamil movie? You must be the first guy to use these words in the same sentence. So this cop looks at a ticket, and immediately figures out that the guy that held the ticket is the killer. And yet, you look for logic further down the movie. Bad Boy.
3. Asin was travelling unreserved, maybe.
4. Yes, this is about the best you’ll get from a Tamil movie.
Well, to (1) I have to answer, when YOU call it watchable, I do expect more than this – however, in the light of point number (4), I bow to superior knowledge, and have suitably lowered my expectations
[Strains of "Lowered Expectations..." a la MAD TV]
Point no. 3 – No, it was a sitting compartment, like they have in Kovai Express. Unreserved compartments are different – they have wooden seats, narrow luggage racks where 2nd class sleepers have berths, and are bloody crowded, especially trains bound for Mumbai and Delhi. The narrow luggage racks are usually occupied by sleeping men.
“Duuuuuuuuuuuuddddddeeeeeeee”, in my South Park imitation.
I’am here to defend myself too. You said it pal, you don’t watch too many Tamil films. We just watch too many. Well, beggars can’t be choosers, can they?
Finding loopholes in the Movie are we? OK, here I come:
» Do you honestly think a Businessman like this guy actually has the time for a Romance in Vysarpadi?
» what the hell is Riyaz Khan? A gay? Why does he start reading this guy’s diary instead of calling for backup? And, which guy in his right mind, would have his own picture in his (every) diary!
» Why on earth would a Millionaire not even have a guard to protect him? If I were his advisor and had even passed out of a school, I would insist.
» After Riaz Khan snaps, why doesn’t Nayanthara go to the Cops?
» Surya’s character says (in the closing scenes) that he doesn’t have to be told who killed his sweetheart. Why does he get confused (with the photos) when he’s in the garage, having thrashed the henchman?
» At the Party, where Surya fakes it, what did the folks flashing their Cameras around do with the Photos; file it in their personal albums?
» Do you take it that I did not cringe, when 4 Mercs drive in parallel on a Madras street?
» How about the time Surya vanishes from the Bus, when the Cop comes running after him? Thank your luck that the whole Bus disappeared!
Don’t you for a moment assume, we didn’t think it was all messed up! We’re just tired and hungry people…
Hemanth,
My apologies – I bow to superior knowledge here
Good to see that you guys are still excited by the light at the end of the tunnel – even when you’re fully aware that it’s a train rushing at you
Cheers,
Navin
> can someone tell me why the movie is called what it is called
Probably because Surya will not rest until he has tried again and again and again(like the Gajini of yore) to extract his revenge on those who killed Asin ? A humble attempt….I havent had the pleasure of seeing the movie yet
May I recommend that you apply salve to your wounds by watching “Memento”, if you havent done so before ?
Vibhu,
Memento – Suresh has the DVD and I’ve asked him for it – I should be seeing it soon!
As for the explanation of the title, I heard the same thing this morning and am utterly unconvinced. Why not Robert then, or… This is going to be another exercise in futility, isn’t it?
Cheers,
Navin
we can critize on these movies.but every movie has hardwork behind it.
@Suresh
Doesn’t that make it even more pathetic – that you put in so much hard work and come out with so much trash?
